What is the Trinity?

First of all, I find it critical to point out that the Trinity is the most important doctrine of the Christian faith! I am sure that you are to some degree aware that God the Father, God the Son and God the Holy Spirit make up the Trinity. You may have recognised that the word ‘Trinity’ isn’t actually written in the Bible, but the Bible clearly points out that they are all equal. The word Trinity means three in one, triune. Christians are TRINITARIANS. This means ONE GOD-THREE PERSONS. At the same time, it is critical to remember that we do NOT believe in three Gods. We find proof of this in Deuteronomy 6:4- “Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God is ONE LORD:” This doctrine is such a confusing aspect of the Gospel. We as human beings do not know everything, and the Trinity is something we cannot fully explain. There are many sayings to try and explain the Trinity, but in our sinful world, there is NOTHING that is equal or similar to the Trinity.  Another key area is how the trinity works. After doing a bit of research I found something called Scutum Fidei which is a Latin word for ‘THE SHIELD OF FAITH’. If you turn to Ephesians 6 verses 10-20 it talks about the whole armour of God. In verse 11 it states,

“Put on the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil.”                                                                                To resist the devil we need to put on the whole armour of God.-Father, Son and Holy Spirit. A person who believes that God is but one and not three in one is Unitarian and as such robs God of his wonderful glory!

If you now turn and draw your attention to verse 16 it says……

“Above all, taking the shield of faith, wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked.”

The shield of faith is a diagram which attempts to explain in a simple manner the working of the Trinity as revealed in the Bible.

The Trinity in action…

Each person of the Trinity works in perfect harmony and unity. The Trinity is fully equal in one accord loving one another always. We must remember that despite their distinctiveness there is perfect order in the Godhead. Three persons yet one God but all with different roles to play.

Creation through the Trinity

We sometimes make the mistake of reading the creation story in Genesis without considering the wonderful works of each person who makes up the Trinity.

Here are a few verses that reveal this great truth….

  • God created the Heaven and the earth-  Genesis 1:1

  • The Holy Spirit moved upon the face of the water-  Genesis 1:2

  • I was with Him, rejoicing before Him. Proverbs 8: 22

This now shows that God the Father created the world and did it through the Son and by the means of the Holy Spirit.

Salvation through the Trinity

Salvation all started through God the Father. But what is salvation? I will answer that question by giving you a verse and then an explanation….

  • John 3:15- “For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life."

In John 3.15 it explains to us that we the dirtiest of sinners who do NOT deserve Gods Grace and love can receive it. The first section of the verse says that God loved the world …… And who is in the world? US….SINNERS! Then it says that God loves us so much that he gave us his son Jesus to die! The next part of the verse goes on to tell us that to have SALVATION all we have to do is believe in Christ Jesus, his son. Through him dying on the cross of Calvary, he took the weight of our sins. Through that amazing love, WE can be named and seen as righteous by God! If we are his, God will not look at us and see our retched sins but Jesus Christ his son’s righteousness and the Holy Spirit in our hearts!

Plan of Salvation……

  • The Father planned it.

  • The Son executed and carried it out.

  • The Holy Spirit applies it to our hearts.

Now we move on to Hebrews 2:3- “How shall we escape, if we neglect so great salvation; which at the first began to be spoken by the Lord, and was confirmed unto us by them that heard him” It is so sad that so many in this world are rejecting this amazing gift of salvation. Without salvation, they have no future! They may have a fun, rebellious and pleasurable life in this world for a while but have they considered what comes next after death? If you have that amazing gift of salvation you will be living a life for the Lord with the Holy Spirit in your heart. You will be taking the shield of faith where ever you go! The truth and reality are that you will either be a child of God and will receive the amazing gift of eternal life with Christ Jesus or everlasting torture in Hell. Hell is real and there is only one way of escaping and that is through Jesus Christ.
