How can I grow as a Christian?

As followers of Christ, we should desire to learn and grow to be more and more like our Lord Jesus Christ. From the day of salvation, until we see Him again. It’s easy to say, I want to grow as a Christian.  But the questions is how do we grow?

Prayer. If we’re in a relationship with a person, we strengthen the relationship by spending time and talking to that person. If we didn’t talk and spend time with them, how would we get to know them? How would the relationship progress? In the same sense, we must talk to our Lord regularly bringing all before Him. We must enjoy spending time with God, including him in our daily lives. Prayer can take place quietly, in our hearts, out loud, in a group whether we are asking Him for advice, support, thanking him, confessing or praying. If we want to be used by God we must spend time with him. The importance of prayer is emphasised in 1 Thessalonians 5:17, "pray continually." A.W Tozer’s said:

“If a man wants to be used by God, he cannot spend all of his time with people”

God wants us to spend time with him just as we spend time with the people of the world.

The Bible. The Bible is fully inspired and God-breathed. Jesus is whom we strive to be like therefore the Bible which in which Jesus is central to from Genesis to Revelation is a pivotal guide so we can learn and strive to grow in grace.

The importance of the Bible is emphasised in Joshua 1:8 "Keep this Book of the Law always on your lips; meditate on it day and night, so that you may be careful to do everything written in it. Then you will be prosperous and successful". We are instructed to know the Gods Word. I would encourage you to read each day, whether it be a few verses or a few chapters. God speaks to us through His Word.

Worship and fellowship. Praising God lifts up our Spirit, strengthens our passion and love for Christ and helps us grow. Listening to and singing Christian hymns is such a good way to praise our Lord. Psalm 33 verse 1 highlights this "Sing joyfully to the LORD, you righteous; it is fitting for the upright to praise him”. Spend time with other Christians. The fellowship is important. Being able to share Scripture together, learn from one other, encourage one another and share our struggles is not only healthy but allows us to trust and love God more.
