COMPARED TO HER

Compared to Her...
 How to Experience True Contentment

hcth_mediumborder.tpnsfinxexkp335bgxqu63

Compulsive comparison disorder is something many of us don’t realise we have. In our modern world, we all seem to compare ourselves to others. Comparing ourselves to models, celebrities or friends. Sophie de Witt outlines these issues in our societies and the damaging effect comparing ourselves to others has not only our mental health but spiritual health. Sophie de Witt points us to Scripture and biblically points us to the liberation from comparison through Jesus Christ. This book will help you build your confidence and take away that desire to be somebody you are not. 1 Samuel 16:7 says "But the Lord said to Samuel, “Do not consider his appearance or his height, for I have rejected him. The Lord does not look at the things people look at. People look at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.”

STORYLINES

Storylines: Your map to understanding the Bible

7508744._UY475_SS475_.jpg

As Christians, we should ground our roots firmly in the living word of God; the Bible. However, many of us struggle with how we should read the Bible. We’ve tried concentrating on single verses, single books and single authors; but what about the bigger picture? The Bible is one book after all. Storylines by Andy Croft and Mike Pilavachi urges us to look at and read the Bible from a new perspective; following Storylines. In a way, we can think of these Storylines as themes, such as God’s Faithfulness, Salvation and Jesus’ story, all the way from Genesis through to revelation. This book gives us many examples and top tips on how to understand the Bible in this way ourselves and will open your eyes to a whole new appreciation of God’s word.

The prodigal god

The Prodigal God

Prodigal-God-large.jpg

The Prodigal Son in Luke chapter 15 could be classified as one of Jesus’ best-known parable. Or so we thought. In this book “The Prodigal God”, Timothy Keller explains to us that there is another side to this parable. As we take note of who Jesus’ audience at the time was, we see that the Pharisees, teachers of the law and tax collectors were also present. Why would Jesus teach them a message that only condemns and forgives only the younger son?  Keller suggests that we should refer to this parable as “The Two Lost Sons." In The Prodigal God, we receive a glimpse of both sides of society; the proud older brother and the careless younger brother, both equal sinners, equally lost and yet equally loved by their Father.

FREDOM OF SELF FOGETFULNESS

The Freedom of
Self-Forgetfulness

6d70313ac26bd4473c3bcc9ec27626e9.jpg

Keller writes a thought-provoking book on The Freedom of Self-forgetfulness, basing his thoughts on 1 Corinthians 3:21-4:7, Pauls writings to the church in Corinth. Throughout the book, Keller touches upon the overly common trap of connecting everything to ourselves and being entangled in the obsession of constantly and consciously attempting to make a positive and impressive impact on the people around us. Keller describes how we often seek attention from others, and in doing so allow the build-up pride. Keller points out ''the way the normal human ego tries to fill its emptiness and deal with its discomfort is by comparing itself to other people.'' In this short and easy to read book, Keller directs us to the truth that gospel humility means stopping ourselves from "connecting every experience, every conversation with ourselves and can thus be free from self-condemnation". This is a great book for people of all ages as it challenges us to take stock of the areas our ego might have slipt into pride, overthinking and thirst for acceptance and encourages us to focus upon Christ rather than ourselves.

Dirty Glory

Dirty Glory

514NDagR6vL._SX331_BO1,204,203,200_.jpg

If a book has ever made you cry, it’s usually because of a beautifully written dramatic tragedy or soppy happy ending. But ‘Dirty Glory’ by Pete Greig manages to tug your heart strings by using normal people’s experiences (like you and me) to reveal the reality of the presence of God in the world and the true power of prayer. From Israel to Ibiza, Scotland, Mexico, Bulgaria and so much more; ‘Dirty Glory’ takes you on a journey that will ignite a genuine and lasting passion in your heart for Jesus, justice and jubilee in every ‘normal’ decision you make. It acknowledges our doubt and respects difficult decisions, but this book will help you walk in a way that invites Christ into it all.

Hunger for reality

Hunger for Reality

1510433.jpg

Do you often struggle to incorporate your Christian faith into everyday life? Does the issue of double living often leave you confused and frustrated? This issue is something a lot of us face at some point during our walk with God. In this book, George Verwer tackles this issue head-on and emphasises the great need to eliminate double living which can often lead to dangerous grounds within our faith. Verwer calls for us to “declare a personal revolution” and gives us clear points on how we can go ahead to live a fulfilling life for Christ and abolish the frustration caused by double living. This book will help guide you forward in your faith and encourage you to take a stance for Christ in your everyday life. The importance of this is reflected in Romans 12:2 which says, “Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will”.

Do you pray

Do You Pray?

51H2phfCqXL.jpg

Do You Pray? by J.C.Ryle is a short book with a very challenging message. Prayer is a habit that is often too easily broken, but it is essential if we desire to grow in our faith and love the Lord Jesus more and more each day. This book offers practical advice on how to commit to prayer, as well as offer warnings to those who don't see the importance of prayer. The message of the book hasn't been adjusted at all, the phrasing and vocabulary has just been modernised so that it makes it very easy to understand! The chapters are short and concise. There a Bible references in many of the chapters and also links to Bible passages in the footer of many pages which makes it a good study guide on the subject of prayer!

Joy of Fearing

The Joy of Fearing God

41YWzAV+TZL._SX331_BO1,204,203,200_.jpg

This book considers how we as Christians can experience a deeper relationship with God and embrace a righteous fear; not to have a negative fear of God but a positive fear that stems from passionate love and joy. Bridges explores how the fear of the Lord opens the door to a far deeper and more intimate relationship with Him. Throughout this book you learn that righteous fear can and should result in a genuine and profound delight in God.

The
Pilgrims
Progress

120348528_3444569082297353_6256995460874

This book is widely regarded as a fundamental cornerstone of Christian and theological literature, with complete translations in just over 200 languages. In my experience of reading it, Pilgrims Progress's value cannot be overestimated and the lessons to be found in it are countless. There is encouragement and conviction in equal amounts as you persevere along with a young man named Christian on his journey to the Celestial City. Through this metaphorical novella you will gain a wealth of knowledge and guidance while enjoying John Bunyans unique and simple yet engaging style of writing. This wonderful piece of literature which is filled with scripture, appropriately and successfully utilises a fictitious storyline to teach an accurate truthful Biblical lesson about salvation and the Christian life. Ultimately Pilgrims Progress will warm your heart, convict your soul and encourage you to keep your eyes fixed on the eternal goal, our home in Heaven.

on being aservant

On being a servant of God

9d8807bdad1448db5ec750f7dda14291.jpg

Warren Wiersbe presents thirty short ‘armchair chats’ that will encourage, revitalise, strengthen and motivate you for Christian service. In a world that seems to emphasise that a successful ministry can't be achieved without an overflowing pot of money or that a trendy social media presence is a necessity, this book reminds us that being a servant of the living God is all about trusting Him. Effective biblical ministry, Wiersbe says, “takes place when divine resources meet human needs through loving channels to the glory of God.”

It is extremely easy to lose focus on the aim and becoming entangled in a web of how. How will we do it. How will we afford it. How will this convince the community? How and why would God use me? - In the midst of the how’s and why’s, we are invited to ponder the God who sustains and uses weak and sinful individuals to accomplish His plans and purposes. Whether you are a minister leading a church, youth worker leading a youth group, a parent raising a family or individual looking to serve the Lord Jesus in your day to day life, this book will uplift, inspire and enable you to fix your eyes upon the master.

ErnestReisinger.jpg

This book, written by Geoffrey Thomas, tells the story of a Christian American man who is an unsung hero of evangelism. This biography goes through in very well collected detail about the letters, notes and memoirs of this pastor and travelling evangelist. Thomas explores Ernest's salavation and faith, whilst unpacking how he lived for Jesus in the places he found himself in. Ernest was a businessman, this book looks at how it is possible to devote yourself and your business to God, and undertake business in a way which glorifies God in honesty and righteousness. This biography also covers many challenging topics, and offers practical advice that is Biblically founded. From church leadership, parenthood and student outreach, Ernest was involved in it all and his years of experience are invaluably shared in this book.
